Birmingham Senior Cup Update

Hednesford Town Football Club has taken the decision to withdraw from this season’s Birmingham Senior Cup, ahead of the semi-final against Leamington FC.

Reaching this stage of the competition has been a positive achievement for the team, so this is not a decision taken lightly.

After careful consideration, the club feels this is the most sensible step in order to give full attention to the league campaign. With a demanding schedule and the physical demands currently placed on the squad, it is important to prioritise fitness, recovery and performance levels to give ourselves the best possible chance of finishing the season strongly.

It also became clear that fielding a team in the semi-final would likely have meant relying heavily on some of our younger players. While we are hugely proud of the talent coming through, asking them to face a full-strength senior side at this stage of their development would not be the right environment or the right test for them.

The scheduling of the competition has also been an important factor. The Birmingham Senior Cup Final is due to take place on Thursday 30th April at Bescot Stadium, just a few days before the NPL Premier Division Play-Off Final. With promotion still very much in our sights, we have to give ourselves the best possible chance of being ready for what could be a defining match in our season. Just as importantly, we do not want to risk reaching the final and then finding ourselves in a position where we could not fulfil it, which would be unfair on the Birmingham FA and the prestige of the competition itself.

This news may be disappointing for supporters, and we fully understand that. However, the league remains our main focus, and this decision gives the squad the best opportunity to stay in the strongest possible condition, while also protecting younger players and keeping the club fully focused on what lies ahead.

Thank you for your continued backing.
