Title chasing Hednesford Town hosted tenth placed Ashton United at a sold out Keys Park on the final day of the Northern Premier League season.

The Pitmen started in dominant fashion. In the second minute, Omari Sterling James cut the ball back towards Jake Jervis who brought out a wonderful double save from Jordan Eastham. It wouldn’t be long until the deadlock was broken. In the tenth minute, the hosts would reap the rewards of a lapse back pass from Darius Osei which found Montel Gibson who struck a fierce shot from the edge of the area past Eastham. Following the goal, the Robins would turn the game on its head. In the 24th minute, Callum Spooner unleashed a spectacular strike from the edge of the box past Tony Breeden. The visitors didn’t let up from there. With 35 minutes gone, Osei would atone for his earlier error as he fired in a fierce header following a cross from Alex Byrne to dampen the mood at Keys Park. The hosts looked to respond quickly. In the 38th minute, Chris Hussey whipped in a wonderful cross onto the head of Jamie Morgan though his effort was saved by Eastham. Minutes later, two would become three as in the 42nd minute, Callum Rowe struck towards goal which was parried away by Breeden but only as far as Osei who doubled his tally rounding off a frustrating first half for the hosts.

HT: 1-3

Minutes after the break, Osei would have an eyewatering opportunity to grab the match ball.

Spencer Knight whipped the ball into the box and despite being only a few yards from goal, he put his effort over the crossbar. The visitors continued to dominate the opening proceedings of the half as in the 52nd minute Knight cut inside once more and forced Breeden to push his strike over the crossbar.

In the 72nd minute, the Pitmen would find themselves a lifeline as Ahkeem Rose found himself one on one with Eastham who produced a miraculous save but it wouldn’t be enough as Joe Doyle-Charles latched onto the rebound and fired the hosts back into the match. In the 86th minute, Dan Trickett-Smith took on an effort from the edge of the area as the Pitmen looked to snatch an equaliser though his effort fell into the arms of a grateful Eastham.

Four minutes into injury time, Doyle-Charles whipped in a cross from deep towards Rose and despite it evading , George Williams would be on hand to fire in the equaliser bringing an end to an enthralling final day at Keys Park as the hosts now look towards their playoff encounter on Tuesday night against Stockton Town.
