Warrington Town 0-0 Hednesford Town

Hednesford travelled to Warrington for the second time this season, this time to face an in-form Town, who had an enviable home record. In one of football’s quirks Warrington’s leading goal scorer Niall Watson lined up for Hednesford Town, following his recall to the Pitmen after a productive loan spell with The Wire.

In a closely contested match both sides created chances that could have won the game; however, it was the Pitmen who began the stronger of the two. Hednesford had a couple of corners in quick succession early on, before Montel Gibson fired a good chance high and wide for the Pitmen. Warrington responded in the fifteenth minute with four consecutive corners before Tony Breeden was able to gather the ball in. Gibson was denied a goal scoring opportunity by a great defensive tackle, while at the other end Jamie Morgan cleared a dangerous cross from Josh Vela, with Matthew Waters poised to head home. A heavy challenge on Dan Trickett-Smith, gave the Pitmen a freekick on the edge of the area, Chris Hussey’s shot deflected off the defensive wall forcing a decent save from Luke Hewitson. Trickett-Smith shot wide, and Watson saw an effort saved as the Pitmen tried to find a breakthrough before the half time whistle.

HT 0-0

The second half began with Evan Gumbs getting on the end of a Warrington freekick, only to put the ball wide of the mark. Akheem Rose saw a good Hednesford attack break down as he was flagged offside, Rose forced a save from Hewitson, following a tremendous run down the wing from Joel Taylor. An opportunity fell to Max Sheaf who shot narrowly over the bar for the Pitmen. A nasty injury to Joe Doyle-Charles following a collision, saw the midfielder carried off the pitch on a stretcher in the 78th minute and was replaced by Joss Labadie. A superb defensive tackle from James Melhado prevented substitute Dan Turner from scoring a winning goal late on for the Pitmen. During the seven minutes of added time the Pitmen twice went close, Trickett-Smith charged down a clearance before shooting inches wide, before Sheaf put a corner narrowly wide at the near post. In reply Reece Daly shot from distance for Warrington but his effort was comfortably saved by Breeden. The game ended in a stalemate, which was a fair reflection on a hard-fought encounter, leaving the Pitmen top of the table at Christmas.
